SILVERADO MEMORIES
by Ed Rozema

Responding to CANYON RECOLLECTIONS BY JIM KELLY

My name is Ed Rozema and I grew up in Silverado and I have a lot of

the same memories that you have. I lived at 29322 Silverado Canyon Road

during the 60's and 70's. I went to Silverado Elementary, Played in the

Chicken Farm. Played in the old community center building, was a member of

Cub Scout pack 54. "Pack 54 where are you?" This was at the time of car

54. The old police comedy. 29322 is just below the triangle of the old

hotel. Just over the bridge. I watched the mud slide come down and push

the fire trucks out of the front of the fire station. I lost Ricky

Henderson, one of my best friends. along with the mother of my girl friend

Jeanie Schrow and the father of one of my class mates, Mr.. Dewitt. (No

longer sure of the spelling.of the names).

I remember when the common form of transportation for kids was

hitchhiking. It was as if we had our own community transportation system,

with no fear and never a problem.

The old man who lived over the store was Mr. Sparks and Mrs. Sparks

was his wife. They taught us all about credit as we had a credit account

with a limit of 5 dollars that was run out of an old cigar box where they

kept track of who owed them what. Nothing would be worse than being cut

off. I remember after each report card running over and showing them my

report card cause I got a candy bar for a B Average. I also would go to the

post office where Ilah Odem, the post mistress would give me a hug if she

saw an A on it.

I remember playing in the Olive Grove that was across of the creek

where I lived. For the longest time it had a very old stone house where we

used to play Army.

I remember when the old hotel was torn down and my brothers and I were

playing on the rubble when I fell and 7 nails ripped up my back. Tetanus

shots!!!!! No one even thought about suing. It was not that type of life

style. I was in the first 7th grade class at Cerro Villa Jr High School.

(Now middle school.)

I remember working at Irvine lake and rolling my VW bug at the

chicken farm when I was racing my brother Rudy to school and and blowing a

tire.

Sorry, Just brought back a lot of memories. Take care. It was

fun just sitting here and typing.
