Modjeska's Bauer's Candy |
Since 1889, four generations of the Bauer
Family have been making this homemade, hand-dipped confection. Caramel Biscuit
was its original name. The name Modjeska has an interesting history. On
December 7, 1883, Anton Busath attended the American Premiere of "A
Doll's House" at the McCauley Theatre, Louisville, Kentucky. He was
so impressed by the performance of Madame Helena Modjeska, famed queen of
the Polish stage, he asked permission to name his newly created confection
after her. The Bauer family has continued to honor the creator of this classic
candy piece by use of its name.
This delicious treat can be purchased
from the Helena Modjeska Foundation or in large orders from the Taste of
Kentucky Company.
